About our internships

Our farm is open to high school and college student interns during the spring, summer, and fall. Interns can work part-time, or full-time, depending on availability. Our program offers students the ability to tailor internships to their specific interests, so interns can explore a variety of specialized topics under the guidance of our staff.

Note: We are not able to provide any monetary compensation for interns, but can work with you to secure funding from your institution. When available, paid internships at Martha’s Community Farm are offered through partner organizations, to see currently available paid internships, click here.

Sustainable Agriculture Intern

Agricultural interns will work alongside the farm staff to produce food for the food pantry. Ideal for students interested in food security and regenerative farming.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with farming tasks  

    • Crop planning 

    • Field preparation 

    • Planting, weeding, harvesting

    • Pest prevention 

    • Building compost 

    • Preparing produce for distribution 

    • Infrastructure, equipment and tool repair and maintenance 

  • Engage in solutions for for insecurity and unsustainable agriculture systems

Requirements

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs

  • Ability to work on feet for most of the day

Community Engagement Intern

This internship focuses on community engagement, event coordination, and public outreach. It is well‑suited for students interested in nonprofit work, community development, or event management. 

Responsibilities 

  • Assess current Farm strategies relating to community engagement and events 

  • Assist in planning and facilitating workshops related to food, sustainability, and community learning 

  • Support the coordination of a speaker series 

  • Help lead volunteer events and engage with community participants 

  • Represent the Farm at festivals and community gatherings

Student Value

Interns develop leadership, communication, and event‑planning skills while contributing to community‑focused programming. 

Artist in Residence

This internship invites creative students to develop an original artistic project inspired by the Farm’s environment, values, and community. It is ideal for students in fine arts, design, or related fields. 

Responsibilities 

  • Brainstorm artistic concepts that enhance the Farm’s visual environment 

  • Draw inspiration from the Farm’s landscape, mission, and community stories 

  • Select a signature project, develop a project plan, and execute the final work 

  • Potential project areas include but are not limited to: 

    • Indoor or outdoor murals 

    • Garden signage 

    • Sculpture installations 

    • Indoor gallery pieces 

  • Collaborate with the social media team to document the creative process 

  • Contribute a small piece to the Farm’s seasonal zine 

  • Explore themes such as sustainability, food sovereignty, community, and social justice through art 

Student Value

Interns complete a major portfolio piece, gain experience in public art, and leave a lasting contribution to the farm.

Environmental Education Intern

This internship is designed for students interested in education, environmental studies, curriculum development, or community outreach. Interns will help enhance the Farm’s role as an educational resource to volunteers and the broader community. 

Responsibilities 

  • Research effective educational materials for adult volunteers and student groups 

  • Assess Farm’s current educational programming and opportunities to suggest improvements 

  • Develop accessible, engaging educational resources across a range of topics 

  • Create materials related to: 

    • Sustainability 

    • Culturally relevant foods 

    • Food sovereignty and justice 

    • Regenerative agriculture 

    • Watershed stewardship 

    • Native plants and pollinators 

    • Wildlife and ecosystem health 

    • Composting 

    • Additional environmental and agricultural themes 

Student Value

Interns gain experience in curriculum design, environmental education, and community‑based learning. 

Social Media and Content Creation Intern

This internship offers students the opportunity to contribute to the Farm’s digital presence through strategic content development and data‑driven insights. Ideal for students interested in marketing, communications, or digital media. 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and propose creative content ideas that highlight Farm initiatives 

  • Evaluate current social media strategies and recommend evidence‑based improvements 

  • Produce short‑form content for platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube 

  • Monitor emerging social media trends and identify opportunities for adaptation 

  • Pitch and outline a cohesive social media series 

  • Conduct research on audience engagement and platform analytics 

  • Identify and organize potential collaboration opportunities with partners and influencers 

  • Support expansion into additional platforms, including LinkedIn, X, and livestream channels 

  • Provide feedback and coaching to on‑camera talent to enhance delivery and engagement 

Student Value

Participants gain hands‑on experience in digital strategy, analytics, and content creation while building a professional portfolio 

Visual Storytelling Intern

This internship is designed for students passionate about filmmaking, documentary production, and visual storytelling. Interns will have the opportunity to create an original film project centered on the Farm. 

Responsibilities:

  • Capture high‑quality video footage that documents Farm activities and stories 

  • Produce a mini‑documentary on a Farm‑related topic of personal interest 

  • Develop storyboards and participate in structured creative planning 

  • Optionally submit the completed film to a local film festival 

  • Coordinate and host a public screening of the documentary at the Farm 

Student Value

Interns will complete a polished film suitable for portfolios, gain experience in production planning, and engage in community‑centered storytelling. 

Media and Writing Intern

This internship provides students with practical experience in reporting, writing, and media outreach. It is well‑suited for students pursuing journalism, communications, or public relations. 

Responsibilities 

  • Assist in building relationships with local agencies, reporters, and publications 

  • Produce one or more written pieces of content for newsletters, blog, or other format that highlights Farm programs, people, and initiatives 

  • Capture photographs to accompany written pieces 

  • Assist in developing, designing, and publishing an issue of a Community Farm Zine 

Student Value Interns gain professional writing samples, media experience, and opportunities to publish work across multiple platforms. 

Landscaping Intern

This internship is designed for students interested in landscape management and design. Students will work with the facilities team, growing team, and engagement team to develop a strategic landscaping design that both enhances the on-farm experience and contributes to the native ecosystem the farm has created. Students will also take on general landscaping responsibilities from the maintenance of existing native vegetation to lawn upkeep. This internship is flexible and can be tailored to the needs of the student.

Responsibilities 

  • Student will develop a creative landscaping design for a specific area of the farm under the guidance of farm staff through a step-by-step process: 

    1) Identify an area of the farm that is in need of improvement 

    2) Develop a design for the identified area  

    3) Present a material list and budget to the farm staff 

  • Assistance with planting, mulching, weeding of native plants in existing garden beds around the property 

  • Assistance with lawn upkeep (ex. weed whacking, mowing)  

  • Upkeep of landscaping tools 

Student Value Students will gain hands on professional landscaping experience as well as learn how to design, plan, and propose a creative landscaping design.
